Ulcerative colitis is a medical condition that causes inflammation of the large intestine. Pathology:
Pathology of Ulcerative colitis includes the inflammation of the mucosal lining of the colon -the large intestine. This results in the development of sores, called ulcers. Due to the sores, the intestinal lining is frequently irritated and results in frequent bowel movements, causing diarrhea. The stools may have mucous, pus, and blood present in it.

Extrinsic factors:

2. Infections caused by E.coli bacteria may cause the diseases to develop, as the bacteria tend to relate toxins in the intestine, which results in the ulceration of the intestinal lining.
3. Medications, such as Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs, Isotretinoin, and some antibiotic drugs, are known to adversely affect the gastrointestinal tract linings when used for a long time.
Intrinsic factors:
1. One of the major causes of Ulcerative colitis is known to be auto-immunity, in which the body’s defense mechanism treats its own cells as foreign bodies, and thus attack the healthy mucosal cells, resulting in an inflamed large intestine.
2. Another most common intrinsic factor for diseases is genetics. It increases the chances of a person developing this disease when there has been a family history of the disease.
3. High and persistent stress can lead to an upset digestive system and have higher tendencies of triggering Ulcerative colitis in a person.
Types of Ulcerative Colitis:
Ulcerative colitis may be of different types based on the parts of the large-intestine affected.
1. Inflammation of the entire colon is called ‘Pancolitis’.
2. When the rectum is involved, it is called ‘Proctitis’.
3 .The disease is termed ‘sigmoiditis’ when the s-shaped sigmoid colon is affected.
4. When the parts of the large intestine, beyond the sigmoid colon, is the site of inflammation, it is called ‘Left-sided colitis’.
Symptoms:
The person affected by the disease may have different symptoms which can be mild to severe. While the milder ones may only affect the daily routine of a person, the severe symptoms may be quite uncomfortable. The symptoms usually come and go, and maybe completely absent during a period of time -called the ‘remission’ phase. Once it is recurring, it’s called a ‘flare-up’. Some of the notable and common symptoms are as follows:
1 Diarrhea: It is the most common symptom of Ulcerative colitis. The disorder starts gradually, with cramps and pain in the abdomen. Depending on the severity of the condition one has to visit the toilet as many as 20 times a day.
2 Blood in the stools: It is another common symptom of the diseases. Often the stool may have blood present in it. Blood appears as smears in the stools and not in the form of clots. Mucus and pus may be present in the stool along with blood.
3 Tenesmus: Inflamed intestinal walls may result in a condition called ‘tenesmus’, where there is a painful urge to pass the stools, but the person affected is unable to do so.
